As a servant of Christ first, and an artist second, receiving the opportunity to make a piece to represent the book of Genesis arose multiple thoughts and emotions in me. My first reaction was excitement of course. Then I thought, who am I to create something to represent the book that shows our God, the ultimate artist, The Creator?! I have come to learn through my personal walk with Christ, that when I am excited while also questioning the impossible, I am exactly where He wants me to be. It means that I must seek Him. I must seek time with Him in prayer and reading His Word, while surrendering myself, my art practice and everything back to God.

Here are things that God made clear to me and what guided my thought process in this piece:

First, I thought about God’s sovereignty and how he created everything just by His word. (ie. “Let there be light”). Also, that God is life.

• The green and blue in the center, are to represent life, creation.
• The colors that show water, growth, and abundance

Second, God’s promise is eternal and infinite, and that is shown from the very beginning.

• The stars represent the covenant and His promise to us. It is told through the story of Abraham.
• The things that God has for us are beyond what we can ever imagine. It is beyond us.

Third, regardless of the fall of humanity, God’s pursuit for us never ends.

• The division of darkness and light is to portray that no matter the fall, His light will always overcome darkness. Even as we continue to choose darkness, God still pursues us and never gives up on us. So there is always hope that we may be with Him again.
• The transparencies within the images are meant to showcase how God has always been true and has left His hand open to us to receive the Truth, if we choose. It also serves as a reminder for us to be transparent to God and not to hide from him in our shame, like Adam and Eve did in the garden. He wants us to bring it all to Him, our shame, our sin, everything into the light.

Fourth, God’s plan from the beginning has always been to be with us. He created the universe to be with us.

• The circle shows His continuous presence, and also to show that his promises are not only outward and that the promise of eternity lives inside of us through Jesus Christ. Through Jesus, we still have access to the eternal paradise that God always meant for us to be in fellowship with Him.

I am continually reminded of the blessing, to be able to experience God through creating. As I invite Him into my art practice, the more I get to learn from Him, the more I begin to understand His ways, the more I get to see everything through His eyes, and the more I see His everlasting love, not just for me, but for each and everyone of us. I honestly could share more and dive deeper. I look forward to studying with everyone as we go through Genesis together.
